Nature & Nurture baby & child vitamin review

Even though we were kindly gifted the Nature & Nurture baby & child vitamin supplement to try, i will definitely be ordering more!

Before receiving the product i didn't realise that the NHS advise every child from six months to five years old to receive a daily vitamin supplement containing vitamin A, C and D based on the department of health's guidance.

The scientific bit -

Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones. Our body can create vitamin D from direct sunlight on our skin when we're outdoors. However, in the UK between October and March the sun isn't strong enough for our skin to make vitamin D, then between March and October the NHS recommends infants and children to stay out of direct sunlight and wear sunscreen. This is why it's advised all children under 5 receive vitamin D as a supplement.
There are several forms of vitamin D, the most important are D2 and D3. Recent studies have shown that D3 is far more effective than D2 as it is much easier for the body to absorb.

Vitamin C is important for children's general health and immune system and can also help their bodies absorb iron, while vitamin A strengthens the immune system, can help their vision in dim light and keep their skin healthy.
Vitamins A & C are so important for growing children and it's because of this that the NHS and department of health recommend they be supplemented alongside vitamin D.

If a child has a healthy balanced diet, the vast majority, if not all of a children's nutritional needs are met so its only these 3 vitamins that the NHS and Department of health advise parents and carer's give to under fives via supplementation. The latest scientific research on nutrition for babies and children (between 4 and 18 months) shows the average daily intake of key vitamins and minerals were above or close to the requirements for virtually all children, with the exception of vitamin D.

How other brands compare to Nature & Nurture (compared to the NHS/Department of Health advise of around 200 micrograms of vitamin A, 20 milligrammes of vitamin C and between 8.5 and 10 micrograms of vitamin D, preferably in the D3 variant).

The NHS & Department of health only recommend a relatively small vitamin A supplement of around 200 micrograms as chances are our children are getting all the vitamin A they need from their diet. Most children aren't vitamin A deficient and the safe intake (from all sources) of vitamin A for infants is 900 micrograms so it's particularly concerning to see some products containing much higher levels, one of the brands provides more than three and a half times the recommended amount, another has double the advised levels of both vit A and C and another 1.75 times the advised levels of vitamin A.

My thoughts -

What i loved about the syrup was that it was so easy to give to Theo! It's a liquid product and It came with a syringe in the box. You only need a small 0.5 ml a day and could give it orally, or mixed with milk or water. I mixed it into Theo's milk and he took all the bottle as usual so there cannot be any funny taste.

Aside from vitamins A, C and D3 the only other ingredients are water and glycerin which is necessary to keep the product fresh. This ensures no unnecessary over supplementation, the supplement industry is as yet unregulated and the reality is little to no research has been carried out on the risks and consequences of unnecessary supplementation.

Nature & Nature was established by two mums here in the UK who's ethos is "putting babies first" and i love that it's suitable for vegans, cruelty free, free from all nasties including all colours, flavourings, artificial sweeteners, allergens and all other unnecessary ingredients, lasts twice as long as some other leading brands, plus, the packaging is recyclable! They really have thought of everything 😀

Award winning registered dietitian, children's nutritionist & baby weaning expert Sarah Almond Bushell has said " Nature & Nurture baby & child vitamins are my favourite as these are the ONLY supplement that provide the actual recommended dose of vitamins A, C & D. They're also free from nasties without additives or preservatives and you only need a tiny 0.5ml dose."

It's also a big thumbs up from the Williams family too!
